Eligibility:
Players that are younger than 14 years old, as of July 31st, are eligible to try-out for this division.
Any player wishing to “play-up” is required to get approval from both Age Level Coordinators (U12 and U14). Please contact to make such a request.
Overview:
Players are expected to attend all tryout sessions. We will hold tryouts “rain or shine” unless the weather is very bad and player safety is at risk. Any cancellations will be posted on the PYSA website and/or e-mailed to parents.
As U-14 is a competitive division, there is commitment involved to the sport. Players are expected to be at all practices and games unless there is a legitimate excuse. There is a Fall and Spring season and most teams will have a competitive indoor session in the Winter.
Players MUST be registered with the Portsmouth Pirates organization in order to try-out for a team. To register, visit the Pirates website: www.pysa.com, click on Pirates Competitive logo and go to the registration link. Player registration is mandatory before taking part in tryouts.
Players should come to tryouts dressed ready to play with shin guards, cleats, a properly inflated size 5 soccer ball and plenty of water. Returning players should wear their Pirates numbered uniform jersey with name on the back. New players can wear any t-shirt and will be given a number for try-out purposes.
Players will be evaluated in various areas by a diverse group of coaches. Evaluations will include:
-- 4 v 4 10 minute games with no substitutions. Emphasis on foot skills including: trapping/passing, quickness/agility and conditioning
-- 8 v 8 15 minute games with no substitutions. Emphasis on offensive and defensive skills/tactics//recognition, field awareness, communication, proper spacing, trapping, passing and conditioning.
