Portsmouth Pirates Referee Program

Referees for the Pirates U12 and below league games are assigned by the Pirates referee coordinator (J.P. Massaro). The referees are paid from $12 for an assistant for U10 to $24 to center U14.

The club provides referees for the U8 and U6 games for our Father’s Day tournament.

Referees who are interested can referee PYSA games in the summer.

If you would like to be a referee, you should be in the 6th grade or higher and you are required to attend (and pass) a training clinic. There are two beginner Referee Levels:

United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Grade 9 Associate Referee and United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Grade 8 Referee. The referee grades do not reflect your grade in school.

A Grade 9 Associate Referee can officiate local games as a referee (with a whistle) for age groups up to and including Under-14. For us, these are scrimmages or the summer rec league. This person can also officiate competitive games (such as SuperLiga) as an assistant referee (with a flag) for age groups up to and including Under-14.

A Grade 8 Referee can officiate any youth games as either a referee or an assistant referee.

The Grade 9 clinic is 6 hours long, and is usually done over two 3-hour sessions. The Grade 8 clinic is 10 hours long, and is done either in four 2.5-hour sessions or in two 5-hour sessions.

The Grade 9 clinic costs $30, and the Grade 8 clinic costs $40. Both of these fees include all the materials, law books, and USSF Certification fees. Additionally you should anticipate the cost of your uniform which is about $45. These costs are not picked up by the club and might be considered an investment.

Most new referee clinics are held between the fall season and the spring season.

Please contact J.P. Massaro (842-0052 ) when you have attended a clinic and/or if there are any questions.
