REFEREE INFORMATION

Portsmouth Referee Program

Rhode Island offers an entry-level training program for individuals, youth to adult, interested in becoming a referee. No prior experience is required; however, you will have a better chance of successful completion with a basic understanding of the game and its laws. Entry-level referees will start as a Grade 9 Referee and will be taught a basic understanding of the Laws of Games, which is adequate for officiating at the recreational level and small-sided competitive matches up to the U12 division. As referees become more proficient, there is a path to upgrade to a Grade 8 Referee to officiate at all levels of youth soccer in the state, including premier leagues. Most referees are usually either Grade 9 or Grade 8. For those that have a strong passion for officiating and want to referee adult competitive games may upgrade to Grade 7 if they meet the requirements.

Once an individual has become a certified USSF referee, there is an abundance of opportunities to officiate both recreational and competitive soccer games throughout state. Use the Soccer Leagues link under the referee resources to learn how to register for various leagues. To register for Portsmouth Summer Rec, please contact the Summer Recreational Director.
